Autism Assessment

Autism Assessment at the Gippsland Specialist Clinic

The assessment process for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically involves a multidisciplinary team approach, including a range of professionals such as a psychologist, paediatrician, speech therapist, and occupational therapist.

The assessment process typically involves a comprehensive evaluation of the individual’s developmental history, including their social and communication skills, behaviour patterns, and any sensory issues. The evaluation may involve standardized assessments and observations of the individual’s behaviour and interactions with others, as well as interviews with parents or caregivers to gather information about the individual’s developmental history.

The assessment process

The assessment process may also include medical evaluations to rule out any other conditions that may be causing the individual’s symptoms.

The assessment team will use diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to determine if the individual meets the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. The DSM-5 criteria for autism spectrum disorder include persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities.

Once a diagnosis has been made, the team will work with the individual and their family to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that may include behavioural interventions, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other interventions as needed. The team may also provide recommendations for educational and support services to help the individual and their family manage the challenges associated with autism spectrum disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorder is eligible to be funded by NDIS.

Comprehensive assessment includes Structured Parental interview and Observation based Autism Assessment Tools such as ADOS-2 or CARS-2:
